In addition, glutamate acts on GABA-A and glutamate-receptor NMDA and AMPA receptors in the retina, and its release is increased by ATP ([@B9]; [@B36]). *Otoferlin* cKO mice show, on the other hand, decreased levels of ATP in the retina. Therefore, the lower concentration of retinal glutamate in *Otoferlin* cKO mice may lead to reduced activation of GABA-A and glutamate-receptor NMDA and AMPA receptors and lower release of GABA and glutamate. The finding that the mRNA levels of *GAD67* and *VGlut1* were decreased in the *Otoferlin* cKO retina may suggest that the reduction in the mRNA levels of GABA-A receptors may have been caused by decreased GABA release from the *Otoferlin* cKO retina, in addition to the decreased number of GABA-A receptors. The mRNA levels of *GAD67* and *VGlut1* were unchanged in the OHCs of *Otoferlin* cKO mice, suggesting that the reduced expression of GABA-A receptor subunits is not caused by decreased release of GABA from the OHCs.
